Not nearly enough to tell if it's as bad as they say. I was very little, after all. But I've heard the controversy about it and, yeah, if Disney itself took it off the shelves it's probable that it's all true, especially considering when it was made.

It's not disgustingly, proudly racist like Birth of a Nation, but it has a quite a lot of institutionalized racism and Unfortunate Implications. The ones I remember being told about were the happy singing black slaves/sharecroppers, and the white boy's black friend who wasn't allowed at the boy's birthday party. Then there's also the real-life stuff, like the actor playing Remus not being allowed at the premiere because of segregation, and just the fact that it's based on African-American tales appropriated by a white man.

Aha. In case you haven't guessed, I'm very much in favor of it staying in the vault. Let it stay there, and instead make an adaptation of the Br'er Rabbit tales done right.

Ugh, the TvTropes article. Sometimes the "OMG librul oppreshun!11!" attitude really gets on my nerves.

Anyway, the worst part about bad adaptations is that they tend to ensure that good adaptations can't be made, at least not until the original adaptation's rights lapse. Though, for the Br'er Rabbit tales, maybe it only applies to the Uncle Remus versions, so a non-"adapted especially for whites" version could be made without infringing on any copyrights...?
