Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10, I found out it's Ada Lovelace Day - a day to blog about female scientists, engineers, technologists or mathematicians who have influenced you.

The thing is... I've been thinking about it since morning, and I honestly can't choose a single one. I can think of at least three different awesome women among my university professors alone.

There's the Biochemistry professor who used to work with Leloir, and when she explained all those horribly complex things (not my favourite subject, heh) you could just tell that she had everything perfectly clear in her mind. The incredibly patient Mollecular Biology professor who helped so much with my thesis when my actual thesis director bailed out, even though it wasn't her job at all. The Zoology professor who studied Crustaceans and talked about them pretty much as if they were her babies.

There are so, so many amazing women out there. I couldn't pick just one.

And of course, there is my VERY AMAZING SISTER THE ENGINEER who may or may not be reading this! ♥

Mr. Spock, Space Wizard

As it says right there in the article: An exploration of how the concept of the wizard translates into science fiction television and films with your friend Mr. Spock from Star Trek.

But apart from being really interesting, it manages to articulate a great part of why I've always loved Star Trek and that I can never express in any other way than "THEY'RE GOOD PEOPLE AND NERDS AND A GOOD EXAMPLE AND AND ALJFLAFJALDSJFLASKJ ♥" So, I quote:

Spock, the Space Wizard has many abilities, including the ability to inspire. As a character existing in a dramatization of the future, Spock presents an ideal for scientific exploration, tolerance, and tenacity. He is attractive to diverse groups from NASA engineers to people of mixed-ethnicity. Fans of the show aspire to imitate his role as a scientist and Space Wizard. If Gene Roddenberry's vision holds an appeal as a future that new generations can attempt to create, it is an attainable Utopia for dreamers. Star Trek is a show about humanity, and Spock is a part of humanity. He reflects mankind's great potential, and endeavoring to be like Spock or any other Star Trek character is the search through science to be the best human possible. A fantasy wizard hordes knowledge from the past. A science-fiction Space Wizard inspires knowledge yet to be found in the future.

I love you, Star Trek. ♥

En palabras de Fu: blog de pajaritos =D (Y algunas plantas)

Non-Spanish speakers can go look at the bird photos anyway. It's not like there's a lot of text.

I finally saw Sherlock Holmes yesterday! And I had a crazy amount of fun. I have to admit that I'm by no means an expert and much less a purist, but I do like the books, I was sort of expecting to see Sherlock Bond from the trailer... and nope, it was Holmes all right. Silly and over the top, yes, but in a very enjoyable way. Something else I have to admit: I never really did like Holmes as a character. I loved the stories, loved Watson, couldn't stand him. (Surprising, I know, because "I'm a genius with an ego the size of a small planet" is one of my favourite character types. Who knows what makes the difference there.) But yesterday, in the movie? I DIDN'T WANT TO PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE! Not even once! I actually liked him, huh. And since they didn't change his personality, I'll have to blame this entirely on RDJ's charisma, I guess.

Also, a meme! Leave a comment saying, "READ HARD" and I will give you five things I associate with you. Then post about what they mean to you, along with this, at your journal. The words I got from [livejournal.com profile] telrunya:

wizards, Transformers, gen, Ouran, science )

This is what I try to tell people every time some "scientific" news makes it to TV.

Every. Time.

Yay for getting a shiny graphic for that! XD

I've always liked PHD Comics, but this particular strip is officially the best thing ever. ♥
