Transformers 3

I went to see it with [livejournal.com profile] drachenaugen today. Short version: it was stupid but fun, I enjoyed it more than the second one because it had less of that awful "humour" and also LEONARD NIMOY.

- Sentinel's "the needs of the many" line alone made it worth the ticket. Well played, well played. XD Also, LEONARD NIMOY. So hamtastic!

- Like I said, I'm glad they ditched most of thost terrible faily "jokes".

- John Malkovich is always hilarious.

- Epps lived! You know, when he said he was happily retired I got all OOOOH YOU ARE SO DEAD.

- The bits with Megatron forever aloooone in the sabana were hilarious. I don't care if it wasn't on purpose.

- That said... dudes, that is NOT MEGATRON, and most of all that is NOT OPTIMUS. (I agree with [livejournal.com profile] drachenaugen; he's Cacho Prime from now on. WHY WOULD OPTIMUS DO THAT THIS ISN'T SHATTERED GLASS.) It's amazing that they can get these characters wrong. I mean, we're not talking ~deep and complex~ here.

- The whole "let's bring Cybertron close to Earth" thing made more sense in G1. Which is kind of sad, really.

- IRONHIDE ;_; You had a personality so of course you had to die.

- Laserbeak is the only competent one! HELLO THERE, ONLY THING THAT'S REMOTELY CLOSE TO ANY CANON.

- Overall, though, it was an entertaining popcorn-y movie. Also LEONARD NIMOY.

Sounds like it's not worth spending money on for me. How was it compared to the first?

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I think you're better of without watching it. And... well, it's hard to tell which one I liked best? The first one had a lot more fail and crude humour, but at least the Autobots didn't make me headdesk nearly as much.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll probably still watch it, just won't pay. I can probably wait until Netflix streams it, or something.

How was Carly?

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She's just sort of... there? Like mostly everyone in this movie, really.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, damn. I liked Mikaela because she was better at the action stuff than Sam most of the time. And in a comic AU, she and Bumblebee were entirely responsible for turning the tide against the Decepticons and reviving Optimus because they're awesome like that.

Who is more fun to hate, movie!Sentinel or Jerkass Prime TFA!Sentinel?

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Carly isn't the action-type, nope. She's a diplomat, but it's only important for about five minutes.

Ooooh, tough one! LEONARD NIMOY aside, I like TFA!Sentinel better. He's fun to hate, he's hilarious, and he's a 3D character with potential to get better. Bayverse!Sentinel is more of a generic Well-Intentioned Extremist.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
She's a diplomat, but it's only important for about five minutes.

And therein lies the problem. Mikaela was just as ordinary as Sam, but she had action skills that she used. Carly supposedly starts out with diplomatic skills, but they never get used. Could you picture Carly as the Autobots' main civilian ally if Sam died? 'Cause I could picture Mikaela in that role thanks to the summaries of that AU comic.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, not a chance! She barely interacts with them at all. And yet she manages to talk Megatron into betraying Sentinel. Uuuuuh.

And speaking of civilian allies, I spent most of the movie thinking about your idea of how much easier everything would be if this was the MIB verse instead.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I've heard of the movie's plot, I'm not sure how it would work in the MIB-verse. MIB wouldn't let the Autobots become public knowledge for fear of endangering the other aliens on Earth, and they also wouldn't allow the Autobots to be deported, given that they're refugees without a home planet.

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most of the plot would have to go away. But that would make for a much better movie. XD

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-19 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And it could have humor that's actually funny and not relying on crude jokes.

Though I wonder how the humans would fit in. The army guys would be fine; NEST is just the sort of thing MIB might set up to defend the planet and promote cooperation, but what about the kids?

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I can think of that they keep getting involved like L did.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
But she ended up recruited; the teens are too young and have too many outside connections for that. But neuralyzing the first humans to bond with the Autobots would be a stupid move on so many levels and unlike Sector Seven, MIB is smart enough to avoid doing that.

The cartoon had one case of a human woman who (unknowingly) married an alien, but who was shown to not be neuralyzed after she found out. (There's also an early episode where a kid bonds with an alien who crash-landed on Earth, and even though J named him an honorary MIB, he was still neuralyzed... though in that case the alien was evil and playing with the kid before eating him.)

Er, to sum up, MIB figuring out how to handle the situation would be a major subplot in and of itself, which would distract from the Transformers conflict possibly in the same way that the movies' human subplots do now. It'd make a good crossover movie, but maybe not a better TF movie. (BTW, what I'm picturing now is a scenario where MIB takes over from Sector Seven after the first movie, as if the universes suddenly merged at that point. I haven't gotten past Zed's epic headdesking over the unholy mess that just appeared in his lap.)

[identity profile] laurus-nobilis.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I can see them deciding that being the first humans to bond with the Autobots is important enough that they can sort-of recruit them. I mean, even if the outside ties are a plot hole, it'd still make a lot more sense than Bay's plot. XD

... seriously, pretty much anything would make a better TF movie.

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'd see them coming up with a new classification for the teens; even though they're not officially the Autobots' family, they'd get treated as such and allowed to keep their civilian identities while still acting as unofficial liaisons between humans and Autobots. Not sure what would happen if one of the kids decided to back out after a while.

Getting back to the actual movie for a bit, what was Sam's relationship with the Autobots like? Was he still trying to push them away so he could have a normal life?

[identity profile] ayasugi-san.livejournal.com 2011-07-20 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
BTW, just to get this out there, what I'd really like to see from a crossover is a universe merge, Suikoden Tierkreis-style (areas and populations from one universe get grafted onto another, and only certain people can remember that the new place didn't exist before the merge). I'm not creative enough to figure out a way to make the backstories mesh while keeping true to the conceits of each series with regards to aliens. This way, you get all the fun of the Autobots treating humans as unique and bonding with them in a way that they haven't with any other alien speices, along with MIB scrambling to deal with these new alien arrivals to Earth shattering the status quo they've built up. Plus, for the secret history in the sequels, that's easily explained by the plot-relevant characters not knowing about Transformer tech on Earth, because from their point of view it didn't exist before the merge! Much more charitable than the humans deliberately withholding important information, right?

Just going to reply to everything you said

[identity profile] drachenaugen.livejournal.com 2011-07-18 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Sentinel, if the autobots are fools and you don't join the decepticon, in which f***ing faction do you stand? What are you? A Sentibot? A Senticon? He can't even be nuetral because he's doing it for a "cause" (though I'll never forgive him, he could kill neon green no personality Ratchet but nooooooo, he just had to go for the black bot)

Your Malkovich comment just makes me think "and BB is so patient with the loonies....be my babysitter in the future yes?"

How rude! Megs is not alone, he's with his wife and the creepy voyager/SW

Bay can do what nobody can: make an uncharismatic Megatron and an un-Optimus Optimus (whatever that is). Oh yes, and they're both wimps who sleep with their night-light on >:( Also Cacho Prime wants his choripan with chimichurri or he's rip your spine out.

Bay also makes G1 have more sense than movie verse. Go beat
THAT!

Ironhide = TAT My poor black bot with brit accent @A@

I want a Laserbeak who will suicide my clients and drool on them DAWWWWWW :D

Popcorn bucket = <3

Sentinel MADE NO SENSE. If he had said something like "there was a time when there weren't factions!" like some continuities imply I would have bought it but... yeeeah.

BB is adorable ;3;

Congratulations, you just made Soundwave even creepier XD

Oh yes, and they're both wimps who sleep with their night-light on >:(
YES. BOTH OF THEM.

NOOOO Laserbeak is creepy XD

TFA!Sentinel was consistent in his nonsense XDDD
