The Joker, who sees too deeply and too much [Card Captor Sakura; English]

Title: The Joker, who sees too deeply and too much
Rating: G
Genre: Genfic
Characters: Cerberus, Clow
Summary: Cerberus reflects on Clow and his Sight.
Notes: Written for Tsukimine Shrine's "Issues" challenge. The title is from The Solitaire Mystery.

Cerberus hated feeling that something was wrong. And he hated it even more when, like now, he knew there was nothing he could do about it.

There he was, sprawled on that chair of his, lost in thought. Again. Clow was drifting off even more often than usual lately, and that couldn't mean anything good. Cerberus knew better than to ask, though. He knew from experience that his Master became particularly uncommunicative in those moments.

Some time earlier, the Guardians had used to show their concern when he went into one of those moods. As an answer, he would just shake his head, or smile, or try to change the subject and distract them. It was unnerving. They only wanted to make him happy- but how, when they didn't even know what was making him sad?

Yue had his own way to deal with it. He made things pleasant; he arranged the flowers precisely the way Clow liked it, or prepared his favourite dessert. In fact, Cerberus thought, he probably was in the kitchen right now. He always knew how to get a smile from his Master, even with the smallest things.

Cerberus wasn't half as good with details as Yue and he knew it, so he didn't even pretend to be subtle. There were other things he could do.

He stood up slowly, as if he was stretching his legs after his long nap in front of the fireplace- and leapt right onto the sorcerer's chair. Clow received him into his arms with a smile.

And that was it.

Cerberus felt his grin fade just as quickly as it had appeared. There was nothing else to his reaction, no hint of the loud, merry laughter he was so used to hear after doing this kind of thing. His Master's eyes hadn't even widened a bit.

"You were expecting it," he groaned, disappointed. A half-hearted smile was Clow's only reply. "That's no fun!"

"I know."

It sounded more like a sigh than a statement. Cerberus stepped back and looked at his Master with concern. Now he seemed all distant again, absently scratching his Guardian's ears, but averting his gaze.

What was it with him?

"It's not your fault," Clow said suddenly after a few moments of silence. Kerberos tilted his head. "You haven't become obvious," the wizard clarified.

"I wouldn't even consider it," the lion huffed, pretending to be offended. But then, what...?

"I had never thought it possible, when I was younger," whispered Clow, more to himself than to Cerberus, "that one could know too much."

Oh.

"You think too much, Clow," the Guardian said in his best no-nonsense tone. "That's your problem. Why don't you just do something fun? We could play backgammon!"

His Master shook his head tiredly.

"Not today, Cerberus."

"Why not?" he insisted. "It's better than sulking! C'mon, you could use a game. And it's good exercise for the mind, like you say, and you can practice those schemes of yours, and..."

...and you never know how it will turn out, he was going to say; but he somehow managed to shut up in time. Clow, however, was looking down at him with a knowing smile.

"You can play with Yue," he suggested.

"But he's busy."

"He'll be done in a minute," the sorcerer assured.

Cerberus groaned. He had nothing against playing with Yue- well, except for the fact that he was probably going to lose. But this wasn't what he was trying to get. He had wanted a distraction for his Master, not a game of backgammon.

"When did you become so boring?" he asked, half teasingly, half serious. Clow chuckled as he scratched the back of the lion's neck.

"Good thing I have you, then."

Cerberus rested his head on the wizard's lap. He couldn't do anything else; he couldn't make the visions stop, or even surprise his Master anymore. Perhaps it was because of that, he thought, that Clow liked to shock people: because he couldn't be surprised himself.

Then, all of a sudden, he saw it. There was a way of changing the sorcerer's mood. And it was extremely profitable, too.

"Clow?"

"Hmm?"

"Make a new dessert for me."

"Of course," Clow said, with a grin to match his Guardian's. "Something completely different."

And Yue always told him it was no use to think with his stomach... Wrong, of course. This time, for instance, it had worked perfectly well. Clow was heading towards the kitchen now, and the lost look, at least for a while, had disappeared.

Cerberus allowed himself a smug smile.
