Twilight

They were going to be beautiful. He had a very clear image of them in his mind; he'd had it for a very long time now, so long that he couldn't remember when he had first Seen them anymore. They would be his beloved daughters, the last of his Cards, and the most powerful.

And they had to be made together.

It was dangerous, and he knew it well. The amount of power and concentration that it would require was enough to leave any wizard exhausted – and vulnerable. But it was an even greater risk to create them separately, to unleash Dark or Light without its proper balance.

So he would give them gentle hearts. He would make them kind and caring, so that if he could not seal them right away they would cause no trouble. It was a lesson he had learned the hard way; but these ones wouldn't give him the problems that Watery and Fiery did.

The design and crafting stages were already complete. He had spent months turning the visions in his mind into ink and paper, perfecting them until they were as beautiful as he imagined them. He had lovingly traced every minute detail of their shapes on what would become his last two Cards.

Now he was ready for the final step; the hardest of all. Although aware of the risks, he felt confident. He knew he would succeed, because he had Seen it.

It was twilight when he did it, with the setting sun and the rising moon watching over to grant their power to his creations. He stood on the exact point of the manor's garden where the underground magic currents were most powerful and he released his staff, his magic circle shining bright and strong.

This was the moment. He could feel it.

He closed his eyes, focusing all of his thoughts and energy on the making of the two Cards. Their images started to take shape in his mind. He could feel his power flowing out of him and into his new creations, but he didn't let it distract him. His visions had told him that it would be enough, that everything would go as he had planned.

They were standing in front of him when he opened his eyes, one with a curtain of black hair, one with waves that shone like the sun; both even more beautiful than he had ever dreamed. Their gentle smiles were so entrancing that he barely noticed when his knees failed.

Satisfied, but exhausted, he let himself fall into a deep slumber. The last thing he felt was Light caressing his face, and he smiled to himself as he let Dark embrace him.
