Surprising [Harry Potter; English]

Title: Surprising
Rating: G
Genre: Genfic
Characters: Dumbledore and Slughorn
Summary: Who needs House rivalry?
Notes: Written for [community profile] 31_days's theme On friendship

Albus had alway found a great pleasure in the little things in life. These included, among many others, chamber music, warm socks, and sherbet lemons - and, of course, the look on people's faces when they thought he was doing something odd.

One of the situations that others found so surprising was the fact that the Head of Gryffindor was such a good friend of the Head of Slytherin.

He knew, deep down, that this shouldn't be a cause of amazement. But the rivalry between those Houses had been born with Hogwarts itself, and he couldn't blame the students for their reaction. Horace and him laughed about it. Their 'rivalry' only extended to the occasional bet on a Quidditch match.

It wasn't that they didn't feel represented by their Houses; quite the contrary. Horace was proud to be a Slytherin, and Albus was a Gryffindor through and through.

But once you've worked together for decades, those divisions are meaningless. You don't think about Houses when you're talking about your students, or about Hogwarts in general, or even just about the finer points of the use of dragon blood in Potions.

You don't think about Houses when, together, you survived a war.

This is very nice! The ending particularly -- it makes the fic, really.

(Er, hi! Random person. Saw you mention Argentina in a common comm and followed you to your journal.)
