Day 5: When do you write what kinds of fanfics?

I honestly had never thought about this, so it'll be interesting to start looking at things this way. Hmmm.

I don't think my mood really affects what I write. It might make me not write, but it's not as if, say, I'm feeling down so I'll write angsty fic (or happy fic to cheer myself up, or whatever). So I guess the focus of this question, in my case, should be more like "when do I feel particularly silly?"

And come to think about it, I think it depends on what I'm writing for. If I'm writing for an exchange, or a ficathon, or a prompt community like [livejournal.com profile] 31_days or [livejournal.com profile] tf_speedwriting or something, that's when I write canon compliant fic like missing scenes and backstory and the like.

If I'm writing for myself? Or for a friend and I know they're into the same crazy stuff as I am? That's when you get crazy crossovers and AUs and, of course, crossover AUs!

That's one thing I've noticed lately, in fact: when I first got involved in fandom, I was really serious about it. I mean, yes, I did write humour fics, but I wrote ONLY canon compliant missing scenes. I was really, really careful about the Dos and Don'ts of fandom (now I think that I must have got those from some very boring fandom sectors, heh). Then I started writing crossovers - and while I do like making them canon compliant, it's really just for the fun of figuring out if I can make different 'verses merge without changing stuff. Then I discovered the beauty of AUs.

And now... well. I'm still serious in the sense that I put effort in my writing, I try to keep my characters IC, I do my best to be canon compliant unless I'm going AU on purpose. But when it comes to content? I still write canon compliant vignettes, sure. But I also write stuff like "the crossover!human!AU where G1!Starscream is Ema Skye's not-really-evil-twin". AND I LIKE IT AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME. =DDD

(... yes, I do actually write that. One moment [livejournal.com profile] kalligeneia and I were making bad jokes about sarcasm and science and generally failing at life, and now it's a whole verse with loads and loads of characters from both fandoms WHAT HAVE WE DONE. I don't regret a thing though :P

... also look at these expressions. The pouting, I just. CAN'T EVER UNSEE.)
