Notes: Written for 31 Days's prompt We used to be friends, a long time ago.
He had come to see her once, so long ago that she doesn't try to remember when, with his head full of mad ideas and an even crazier plan that was supposed to make them work. At first, she had refused; that wasn't her kind of business. But she was too soft not to give in in the end.
It wasn't his stubborness what convinced her. It wasn't, as he later claimed, his silly little smile. What made her see that she had to help was the not quite concealed hint of urgency on his eyes; the feeling that, beneath his calm exterior, he was honestly worried about those children.
Something that managed to trouble Clow Reed certainly deserved attention.

They were fated to meet, and they both had known that from the very beginning. That didn't mean, however, that they could describe what it was they had.
Neither of them had ever met anyone who was truly their equal before. They had an understanding that went beyond words. They knew about power and wisdom, about their greatness and their downsides, and for the first time in much too long there was someone else who felt the same way.
Nobody else understands, he had told her once, half drunk, and it had sounded as if he was complaining about his fate; but she knew him well enough to tell it was a compliment for her.
Even as they became lovers, they remained, above all things, friends.

Sometimes she wonders what would he think if he knew that, after all this time, she still misses him.
